NY Times reports that the National Organization for Marriage (NOM) has begun to run the following ad today in New York City and Albany markets.
Oh, and let's play a game. Can you spot the misspelling in the ad? (Hint - :28)
It gets better. Hours after being made aware of the mistake and correcting it, they tried a second time, and well. . .
Now the lame radio ad:
NG Blog is reporting that they also intend to place a billboard in Times Square.
The Times reports, "Already, the National Organization for Marriage commercial has stirred controversy. WPIX-TV in New York has refused to run the ad, the group said. Officials at the station and the Tribune Company, which owns WPIX, did not respond to requests for comment."
These people are like a broken record, using arguments that have been debunked time and time again.
But they sure know their audience, catering to their worst fears about marriage equality. A recent poll of NYC residents show they're split on the issue, and the newest national Gallup poll shows opponents still greatly outnumber supporters.
A poll ran by NY1 of New York City residents shows a split between them over the potential legalization of same-sex marriage in the state.
The question posed: Do you favor or oppose legalizing same-sex marriage in New York State?
Favor 46% Oppose 42% Not sure 11% Refused to say 1%
The report findings state:
• New Yorkers are divided on the issue of same sex marriage, with 46% saying they favor the legislation and 42% opposed.
• Opinion on this issue is related to age, race, gender and education, with 56 percent of those under 30 in favor versus only 32 percent of those over 65, 51 percent of whites in favor versus 34 percent of blacks and 46 percent of Latinos, 51 percent of women in favor versus only 39 percent of men, and 52 percent of those with a post graduate education in favor versus 38 percent of those with no college.
• Religion is an important factor, but it also reflects the race differences on this question. Jews favor same-sex marriage 48 percent to 39 percent, while among Catholics, who are mostly white or Latino in the city, there is a split 45 percent to 45 percent, and among Protestants, who in New York City are largely black, the view is more negative (37 percent favor and 49 percent oppose).
• Manhattanites are by far the most in favor at 6 percent in favor/30percent oppose, while Queens is most opposed at 37 percent in favor/50 percent oppose.

I'd be curious to know what the ridiculous, anti-gay Sen. Ruben Diaz and his cronies think of these numbers, because despite the fact that they're close, marriage equality is winning. Nothing like using the word of God as an excuse to not listen to those around you.
According to the New York Times, thousands of anti-gay protesters appeared before New York Gov. David Paterson's Midtown Manhattan office, so in response, he showed up to the marriage equality rally along with Mayor Bloomberg unexpectedly and at the last minute.
He was warmly welcomed.
“We’re in a race right now in New York,” the governor told a crowd of several hundred people who gathered along Avenue of the Americas. “The time for justice, the time for equality, the time for equal rights can never be any more urgent than right now.”
The governor "urged the State Senate on Sunday to take swift action on legislation that would allow same-sex couples to marry, signaling that he intends to increase pressure on lawmakers as the end of the 2009 legislative session approaches," reported the New York Times.
The bill has already passed the State Assembly, but the fate of the bill is far from certain in the senate.
Empire State Pride Agenda executive director Alan Van Capelle responded to the news of senators wanting to vote for marriage equality but feared political ramifications.
“Because they’re either lazy or complacent or cowards, they do not act. And history will never forget them. They will not be forgiven,” Mr. Van Capelle said.
The counter protest, where thousands of people lined Third Avenue, was led by the ridiculous, Pentecostal pastor, Sen. Ruben Diaz, and though his earlier protests were dire failures, this was the first success for the marriage equality opponents.
The event, was compared to an evangelical church service,
“We’re here to say to the governor: Mr. Governor, look at the people that are here, these are the people who say we don’t believe in marriage between a man and a man and a woman and a woman,” Mr. Díaz said in Spanish, since the protest was organized by the New York Hispanic Clergy Organization.
WE HAVE TO ACT NOW TO HELP THE PASSAGE OF THE MARRIAGE EQUALITY BILL!
Six weeks is all that is left before the senate session adjourns for the year. If it's not brought up to a vote, it will most likely die.
On the eve of the rally, Westchester, New York's News 12 aired the following report on Carolina Cordero-Dyer and Claudia Glasser and their family, friends of fellow blogger, Blabbeando.
Unite the Fight earlier reported on former New York City mayor Rudy Giuiliani's ridiculous statements against same-sex marriage. And ridiculous they are given that he has a less than stellar track record in this "sanctified" institution.
The current mayor, Michael Bloomberg, recently responded and expounded on his support for same-sex marriage.
My friend, Randy, emailed me a first-hand account:
"We arrived a little after 6:30 (the scheduled beginning time) and there were masses of people in front of the temple. So many signs, cameras, candles, chants. A lot of the NYC gay "glitteratti" were there - Michael Musto, Josh Kilmer-Purcell, Marc Shaiman, Jake Shears - and it was very well-organized, thanks to a great behind-the-scenes team led by Andy Towle over at Towleroad.com. The police were present and were very accommodating. The temple had some burly bodyguards out front, too, but the police made sure no one got too near the entrance. We stood in front of the temple for a good half hour, and then began marching down Broadway to Columbus Circle. I don't think the police or the organizers were planning on the amount of people that showed up, because there were no lanes blocked off for us to march down. So we just shut down the street! It was the only way we could march. I'm sure it frustrated some drivers, but no one honked or got in anyone's face. We had lots of well-wishers along the way too, some even joining in the march. Once we arrived at Columbus Circle (only a few blocks south of where we started), I could tell people just wanted to keep marching. Unfortunately, we didn't have anywhere to go, so the crowd just swelled and swelled, chanting, yelling, singing. It was a very upbeat crowd - anger mixed with sincere optimism that we will ultimately prevail over these nonsensical pieces of legislation."
