In an unprecedented move, the producers of HAIR: The American Tribal Love-Rock Musical, have announced they are canceling the show's Sunday, October 11th performance so that the entire cast can join the National Equality March in Washington, DC.
The entire company of HAIR had traveled from New York to Los Angeles to appear on "The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien". Directly after the recording on Monday, the cast joined National Equality March organizer Cleve Jones along with Torie Osborn and Dustin Lance Black at a spirited rally in Los Angeles, for an official launch of the march and its relaunched website NationalEqualityMarch.com.

wow, i can spend all that money to travel from SF to DC to catch a the cast of a broadway show. why bother spending that money on little things like rent and food, when i can be in DC to hear my gay leaders tell me to buy the cast recording of 'hair' then return home and fight. this march is a train wreck in the making and i intend to watch it all on CSPAN.
ReplyDeletei thought the march was supposed to be about political organizing, and it really seems about putting on a good show and party.
Its amazing how the skeptics in the world will find any means possible to criticize the amazing support and sacrifice that people and companies will make to show their support. The production and cast of Broadway announce that they will give up thousands of dollars of income, in order to attend and support the march, yet SOME people choose to see this as a means of self promotion. I dont know that we need that attitude poisoning our efforts to organize across the country, you are the poison of our movement.
ReplyDeleteI couldn't agree more with anonymous.
ReplyDeleteSomehow, the producers and cast of HAIR giving up all that income to attend the march (NOT PERFORM AT) somehow is conceived as turning the actual work of organizing congressional districts into a circuit party of sorts.
It's people like this skeptic that keeps our movement from going forward because they sit back and criticize while they watch the actual work on CSPAN.
And who watches CSPAN much? That's also part of the problem - publicity. It's like pulling teeth to get the media to cover any LGBT event. This is a NATIONAL event and we need to get the message out to all 50 states and Puerto Rico and more. HAIR has given us somewhat of a platform by getting us more media attention.
If you want to complain about how getting people to attend the march to actually get work done, go ahead. But then do something about it. Get involved. Make the changes that you think need to happen. Otherwise, shut up.
